Description Of Tubal Ligation

Tubal ligation is the surgery that is meant to curtail the capability of women to conceive. The fallopian tubes are nearly 4 inches long and the diameter is 0.2 inches. They are located on the upper side of the uterus and the tubes are connected to the uterus via some small and fine channels.

It is with the help of fallopian tube that fertilization is made possible. When tubal ligation is performed, the tubes are cut and they are tied. This blocks the passage through which the sperm can reach the egg and hence it prevents the possibility of fertilization.

Generally, the entire process takes around 20 to 30 minutes and local anesthesia along with sedation is used. It can also be carried out on women who have just delivered their child.

If a woman is indecisive about the process, it is best opted to postpone it. Nearly 21 percent of women regret the decision of opting for this method. Although it is reversible, but the chances of conceiving gets very slim and there is no assurance.

Ways Of Performing Tubal Ligation

There are several ways in which tubal ligation can be performed and some of them are as follows.

  • Electro Coagulation: It is one of the most common methods where a heated needle is used to burn the tube. The needle is connected to an electrical device and is safe for use.
  • Falope Ring: In this method of ligation, an incision is made above the urinary balder. A plastic ring is placed around the tube and the applicator is inserted via the incision.
  • Hulka Clip: A plastic clip is placed across the fallopian tube and it can be held firmly in place with the help of a steel spring.
  • Silicone Rubber Bands: Right over the fallopian tube, a band is placed. This forms a mechanical barrier which prevents the sperm from fertilizing the egg.

When tubal ligation is performed, carbon dioxide gas is used. This gas ensures that the surgeon will be able to clearly visualize the internal organs and it makes locating the fallopian tube an easy affair.

Hence, those who are sure that they do not want to have any further child can opt to sterilize themselves by choosing tubal ligation.
